Apples - Selecting & Storing
Selection and Storage No matter what apple you pick, choose those that are firm, fragrant and bruise-free. Apples have impressive lasting ability and thus are available year round. October and November are the peak months for apples in the Northwest.
If you plan on eating them quickly, within a day or two, keep the apples on the counter at room temperature. Otherwise, store them unrinsed, in a perforated plastic bag in the refrigerator. As apples ripen, they give off ethylene gas, which shortens the life of other vegetables. So, keep apples in their own compartment unless you need to more quickly ripen an avocado or banana. Apples can be frozen; however, Golden Delicious and McIntosh don't hold up well, so eat those in-season only.
