Pomegranates - Selecting, Storing & Enjoying
How to Select When
choosing a pomegranate you should look for the fruit that is
reddish-pink in color and is adorned with a top that looks like a
crown. The heaviest pomegranate for its size is going to be the
ripest. Also look for good, bright color and smooth skin.
How to Store Pomegranates are shipped
ripe and ready to eat. They can be held at room temperature for
reasonable periods of time, out of direct sun. For longer storage,
refrigerate at 32°-41° F. For home use, the whole fruit or seeds can be
refrigerated in plastic bags or the seeds can be frozen separately.
How to Enjoy Pomegranates
can be consumed in a number of fashions. Eating the fruit raw is
a favorite past time. Slice off the crown and score the top of
the fruit with an X. Force your thumbs into the center of the X
and tear apart the fruit. Inside the average pomegranate there
are approximately 800 jewel-like seeds wrapped in a creamy colored
membrane. While it is up to you, most people consume the entire
seed. Be aware that pomegranates stain hands and clothes.
Drinking pomegranate juice is less labor intensive and can be consumed
anywhere, anytime. Pomegranates can also be used as garnishes, in
recipes, on salads and as meat tenderizers.
